City College opens in Doha with business courses

DOHA: City College, which offers a range of higher education internationally recognised business courses, will open today at Barwa Commercial Avenue, in Abu Hamour.

“The registration for admission has started already and it is still on,” Nichole Munro, Principal of City College, told The Peninsula on the sideline of the opening ceremony held at the College’s facility.

According to Nichole, the courses have been selected and designed especially to suit Qatari job market, as the College has detected a demand for business specialised diplomas in Qatar, based on a feasibility study and local authorities concerns, like the Qatar Chamber.

She added that the main purpose of City College is to offer fast track alternative routes to the Bachelor’s degree for young school leavers or for people already in the industry, who are working and having the subject expertise, but still need the qualification.

“We are offering six specialised courses including accounting, finance, marketing, business management and human resources,” said Munro.

City College implements a methodology to prepare students having the technical expertise, essential to join the job market and to have the credits to entry at the last year of the Bachelor’s degree, as these qualifications are recognised from over 750 universities across the world.

“We offer UK national qualification frameworks, the BETEC (Business and Technology Education Council), at higher national certificate and higher national diploma levels”, she added.

By the end of the first year at City College, students will complete the Higher National Certificate, BTEC Level 4. And after the second year, they will finish the Higher National Diploma, BETEC Level 5. It means that after 2 years, students will have a specialised diploma, as well as the credits to be transferred to the final year of a degree at the university of their choice.

City College also offers Academic Bridging Courses for students who need to improve their English levels, delivering a programme designed to bridge the eventual gap between high school and university. The course includes English for Academic Purpose, Business English and IT skills.

“Our academic team is highly qualified and prepared to deliver an experiential vocational learning experience, with real life based situations classes and more contact teaching hours than the traditional approaches,” said the Principal.

City College can accommodate approximately 250 students and the admissions requirements are English, Level 3 and A levels.

“It is a British curriculum. All teachers are British nationals and we are really proud of our academic staff with vast vocational education background, as we believe education depends on quality”, said Munro.

The objective of City College is not only to support Qatar National Vision 2030 but also to inspire the economy with talents and energy.

“Ultimately our ambition is to provide quality education to support the country development and beyond by adding value to our community through education,” said the Principal.
